Laura Hyde, bass player for realatively new Scottish band Dananananaykroyd has parted ways with the group, less that 4 months after the release of their debut Album.
News of her leaving was posted on the bands blog site on the evening of the 15th june.
There is much conjecture as to why she has left, as comments left on the bands blog(that have now been deleted) suggest she has been fired, and someone from the band seems to have confirmed it. But for what?
Rumors that she is forming a band with her new husband, The Futureheads’ frontman Barry Hyde, is just one possible reason for her departure, but we don’t see why she would be fired for this.
Whatever it was, we here at bassted.com reckon it happened pretty quick as she never mentioned it to Bass Guitar Magazine when they had a little chat for their latest issue, and neither did BGM when they printed her small but perfectly formed piece.
What did you do Laura?
Wanna come and tell us your story here at bassted.com? We’ll galdy have ya!
- Listnin' 2 Blind Melon's 2nd album 'Soup' after re-reading about sad death of Hoon in '95. Great Album, some stuning bass work on here too..

She was sacked, for not being a good enough bass player apparently.
‘apparently’…is this conjecture or do we have some concrete evidence. I had a listen to the album again today, it’s pretty solid bass and the guitars are quite frenetic, doesn’t seem to be much room for uber-flashy bass playing. More of an observation, I know…
I wonder why they said “parted ways” in the post and then David added the comment stating that she was “fired” then that whole post was deleted.
well, according to him the original post was removed because anon posts allowed at the time were getting too “trollish” and immature or something. What do you expect? Line-up changes are fair enough, and it’s up to them who’s in their band, but to be totally snide about it and not expect your fans to question your motives is stupid.
I think it was down to the mention of Giles and James. Someone said “Giles left, James was pushed…” then the original post got deleted. Hit a nerve I think.
the bass on the album could be a Smashing Pumpkins scenario. One person re-recording other people’s guitar/bass tracks. Not suggesting Laura’s contribution wasn’t good, just that someone else in the band thought they could do it better.
Oh yeah, a nerve was definately touched…I returned to the blog the day after the comments were deleted and found 2 - one from someone asking where all the posts had gone and one from a band member clearly having a hissy fit about trolling and anonymous posting etc, as you say, but his post also invited adult conversation about the topic, hence my post.
10 minutes later he had deleted his hissy fit comment, probably realising a public rant at their fans wasn’t the best plan. Wish I had sceen-shot the page to post here.
I agree with you about the Smashing Pumpkins scenario, whilst its not the most intricate bass i’ve heard, I thought it was pretty solid and its simplicity only really helps the guitar sound IMO, no overplaying.
I reckon they announced the new bass player pretty quick…it begs the question of whether it was a done deal before they told her.
If so …harsh.
I don’t think it’s likely that she was fired for the quality of her playing. She’s solid, not particularly flashy compared to some of the other players in the band but perfectly adequate given that there are two guitars and two drummers bashing away around her. You need to keep it simple and sturdy in that situation. I think it’s far more likely it was a clash of personalities, that they just weren’t getting on. I’ve been in bands where one person is just out of place and it’s often not their fault but the long-term effects can be quite wearing and you make compromises where you don’t need to.
As for the band responding to their fans pokes and prods as to the true nature of the situation I think that’s a bit immature. Sometimes you just need to keep your distance and let people speculate. Ultimately it’s not the fans’ business to know the details, and it’s best to keep tight-lipped otherwise it shows there’s a sore spot.
She never mentioned the band in BGM! Thats perhaps a contribution. and plus maybe she was shite!?
